Training Process

The first 90 days

Three Crosses uses the same principals on all our training horses, show horses, rescue horses, and everything in between.

What happens in the first 30 days:

This time is used to learn the horses mannerisms, how they respond to work, learn about pressure and release, learn to lunge, desensitize, cross tie, and many more basic fundamental skills.

What happens in the next 30 days:

This time is used to break a horse to the saddle and having a person leave their safe space on the ground to get on their back. This is when the first rides are put on in the halter and the horse gets used to carrying a bit in their mouth.

What happens in the final 30 days:

This time is used mostly for getting miles on the horse. Since all horses are started in the halter, they will be transitioned into the bridle at this point and learn how to take a bit.

Quarentine

All horses that come in from high risk situations go through a quarantine process. This process lasts a minimum of 30 days (unless signs of sickness are shown then the process could be longer) when we try and get the vet out for a full check over and shots. Mare's from unknown situations get an ultrasound to check for pregnancy and stallions get gelded (if this is an option).

If a horse comes that is not halter broke, we use their quarantine time to work on breaking them as well.

Lessons

All horses in training come with weekly lessons. Learning how to do the fundamental ground work with your horse all they way up to learning how to ride them is very important in the success of a team.

For those interested in adopting a rescue horse we strongly recommend you take lessons with that horse while considering adoption to make sure that horse is the right fit for you.
